About TUI Asia
TUI Asia (Tami Universitas International) is a “Knowing Yehovah God and His Bible” University, redeeming the university back to God and the Bible as its chief faculty member and department.
What is TUI Asia?
- It is a “Knowing Yehovah God and His Bible” University.
- It is redeeming the University back to God and the Bible as its chief faculty member and department.
- TUI Asia is a ministry of The Agape Mission International.
- Tami means “helping people see” in Japanese, based on Ephesians 2:10, where we are created in Christ as a masterpiece before we were born.
- In Hebrew Tam (תָּם) also means complete, blameless and undefiled (Job 1:8, Exodus 26:24, Psalm 37:37).
- It is a university for life and fruitful living, as opposed to ivory tower Christianity that results in big heads and not big hands of service.
- TUI Asia proposes practical creativity in character and career that is Christlike.
“Civilizations in decline are consistently characterized by a tendency towards standardization and uniformity.”
Arnold Toynbee
Varsity meant various
Uni
“One in singularity of unit”: universe, the sum of all things, whole, corporate body, community.
Verse
Including all and excluding nothing. The universe, the whole, the entire number.
Varsity
Various subjects under the one main (Uni) faculty member, who is God, and one main department, the Bible.
The modern word “university” comes from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scolarium, “a community of scholars” and therefore bachelors, masters and doctors within the Roman Catholic Church. Universities grew from the studia generalia, which provided education for priests, monks and scholars. The Bible was hailed in all its preeminence over other subjects, which were studied from a Judeo-Christian point of view.
Why we must redeem the university
Monks prayed, and it developed into monasteries and monasticism. Latin scholars poured their hearts into the word of God and taught the laity, which became Scholasticism. Monks and scholars learned how to live like Jesus lived and taught like Jesus taught, by being apprenticed to skillfully divide the word of God by the power of the Spirit.
In Europe the university sadly degenerated into substituting God and the Bible for logic and reasoning. According to historian of science Edward Grant, the commitment to reason and rational argument that characterized medieval intellectual life became the secular university, devoid of knowing Him personally. Humanism reigned where the intellect of man was worshipped.
The university then turned into power structures that forgot to serve the common man on the streets and the poor in the highways and byways of life. Tom Bloomer, Provost of the University of the Nations, calls this “the practical manifestation of sinfulness and total depravity of the university.”
Therefore we must redeem back the university and its colleges to their original place under Yehovah God and the Bible as the worldview from which we see languages, literature, math, logic, economics, religions, media, education, family, counselling, physics, chemistry, biology, political science and governance.
Special grace and common grace
Like Joshua, who was called to all the mountains of his world, Abraham Kuyper in 19th-century Netherlands shared the Joshua anointing of a call to all. His followers used the Dutch proverb “Met een boekje in een hoekje”, “A Little Book in a Little Corner”, to chide Christians for living with their faith buried away from earthly civilian life.
His thesis: we have all received “special grace” by which we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9), and “common grace” for our work places. Our jobs, careers and vocations are also filled with His grace. This call to every area of society is for us to be salt, light and yeast for Jesus, whether through Arts, Business, Media, Education, Family, Government or Science.
“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!”
Abraham Kuyper, founder of the first Free University
“If we can win the university today, we will win the world tomorrow.”
Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ
Beit Sefer, Beit Midrash, Beit Talmud
The Beit Sefer, Beit Midrash and Beit Talmud of the Jews were adopted in full value into bachelor, master and doctoral degrees by the Roman Catholic Church.
Bachelor: Knighthood
The Beit Sefer, the House of Books. “Bachelor of Arts” came from the Latin Artium Baccalaureus, and the Old French “bacheler”, a young man aspiring to knighthood. An aspiring knight proved his worth in all fields: physical, social, financial and academic.
Master: Teacher licence
The Beit Midrash, the House of Interpretation. A Papal bull of 1233 decreed that anyone admitted to the mastership in Toulouse could teach freely in any other university. Latin magister means chief, teacher, leader.
Doctor: Expounding the Bible
The Beit Talmud, the House of Disciple-making Disciples. From Latin docere, “to teach”. The term referred to the Apostles, church fathers and Christian authorities who taught and interpreted the Bible from its original languages.
